Shipbuilding

Precision Fabrication Solutions for the Ship Building Industry

The ship building industry demands fabrication solutions that deliver exceptional strength, precision, and production efficiency to meet rigorous maritime standards and demanding operational requirements. Modern shipyard fabrication requires sophisticated machinery capable of producing complex hull frame profiles, precision marine frameworks, and heavy-duty assemblies with consistent accuracy and reliable performance. Shipbuilding applications require specialized equipment for bending HP ship frames (Holland profile, bulb flat), L-profiles, and T-profiles—both individually and in opposing pairs. Advanced fabrication equipment enables shipbuilders to achieve the tight tolerances, process reliability, and production volumes essential for competitive maritime manufacturing.

From production bending operations to ship repairs and retrofits, ship building fabrication requires cutting-edge technology with centralized clamping systems, spacious work platforms, and both manual and ultra-modern CNC controls with laser systems—delivering the reliability demanded by mission-critical maritime applications where precision meets seaworthiness.
Stierli bieger

For more than 80 years, Stierli-Bieger AG has been the world leader in horizontal ram bending and straightening machines, providing shipbuilders with the precision and power needed for critical marine structural components and hull assemblies. Stierli's comprehensive range of CNC-controlled horizontal benders excels at creating complex hull frame structures, curved bulkhead components, deck framework assemblies, and heavy-duty marine structural elements that form the backbone of modern vessel construction. From intricate hull rib frames that shift in angle and radius from bow to stern to massive structural components for commercial vessels, Stierli machines deliver the exceptional accuracy and repeatability essential for shipbuilding applications. These Swiss-manufactured systems handle everything from precision marine hardware to massive structural ship components, offering capacities from 9 to 900 tons with specialized tooling for marine steel, hull profiles, and custom shipbuilding components essential for seaworthy vessel construction and maritime safety compliance.

CASE STUDY:

Dakota Creek Industries, an Anacortes, Washington shipyard with 300 employees, manufactures tugs, fishing boats, barges, research vessels and oil recovery ships for fleets on the Pacific, Gulf and Atlantic Coasts. The shipyard faced productivity constraints using traditional methods to form complex hull rib frames. Three workers could produce only three sets of hull frames (six total port and starboard) per day, creating a significant bottleneck as modern ship designs demanded increasingly sophisticated geometries.

With funding from a 2017 U.S. Maritime Administration (MARAD) grant, Dakota Creek installed the Stierli-Bieger 2200 SE CNC horizontal ram bender — the first of its kind in the United States. The results transformed operations. "The Stierli will allow us to expand our daily production from around three sets of hull frames for three people to 12 sets using only one or two people," says Mike Nelson, Dakota Creek owner and vice president. This represents a 400% increase in output with 67% reduction in labor.

The CNC-controlled bender produces bulb profile hull stiffeners with precision and repeatability, enabling Dakota Creek to craft complex opposing port and starboard hull rib frames essential for modern vessels. Beyond productivity gains, the technology improved competitive positioning. "It will take us fewer manhours to do the same work. Where we once might have been priced out of a job, we will have a better shot at winning the bids," Nelson explains. The installation created immediate enthusiasm among operators, who discovered the machine's versatility under guidance from Stierli-Bieger's training specialist. Dakota Creek now pursues projects previously beyond their capabilities, strengthening U.S. shipyard competitiveness in the global marketplace.
